WindyGrid: A Situational Awareness Tool for Cities
WindyGrid is a geospatial application that makes Chicago’s municipal data easily and strategically accessible, all on one map interface. The app allows municipal employees to see 911 and 311 calls, City asset and transportation activity, and even tweets, among other data—all in real time. In 2013, WindyGrid expanded to municipal departments citywide. It has been a crucial interoperability tool for monitoring and coordination during storms, other weather situations and special events. WindyGrid also ranked first in InformationWeek’s Top 10 Government IT innovators of 2013.
WindyGrid is an open-source product and utilizes the NoSQL MongoDB as its back-end. It will also serve as the interface for Chicago’s in-development SmartData Predictive analytics platform, which will help municipal leaders make smarter, faster decisions in real-time to help address and prevent problems before they develop.
