  7. CivicInsight

CivicInsight, created as Blight Status is a powerful tool that gathers data from multiple sources inside a city and provides an incredibly smooth, simple and user friendly interface o the public side to inform and empower residents and community organizations. The focus was initially on the various legal and process stages of blighted homes and their removal in New Orleans, but now the app is being leveraged very creatively for other multi-stage municipal processes. Connecting into existing enterprise systems allows cities to adopt this valuable tool without rebuilding back-end systems.

  12. Democracy Works (We make TurboVote)

Democracy Works is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We believe that voting should fit the way we live today. To that end, we built turbovote.org–a site that helps track voters' election calendars and assists them in registering to vote, updating their voter registration information, and requesting absentee ballots. Through partnerships with colleges and non-profit organizations, we served nearly 200,000 voters in the 2012 presidential election.

Now we're expanding our mission to include serving local election offices as well. This winter, we'll be designing and building a simple tool to help election officials monitor absentee ballots as they travel through the mail, making…
