City of the Year

The City of Boston

Through innovative and participatory technology, the City of Boston enhanced quality of life and increased opportunity for its residents and visitors in 2013. Department of Innovation & Technology initiatives included the implementation of a citywide fiber optic network, targeted to bring WiFi to all Boston Public Schools and add broadband to every public building; and received multiple awards for constituent engagement apps including Citizens Connect, which use mobile crowdsourcing to improve our city and which expanded to more than 40 more communities in the state. The Tech Goes Home team trained 10K families to get online, and DoIT's multichannel #SocialBOS social media team leveraged its powerful citywide network to use creative everyday engagement to ready the city for potential crises, expanding its reach exponentially. In 2013, DoIT supported a massive citywide transition to the Google Cloud, enhanced cyber-security, and extended technology recruiting to bring innovative talent to public service in Boston.
