The City of Bloomington is a progressive community and a leader in the use and production of open source software to streamline city operations, reduce costs, and provide high quality constituent services. The City of Bloomington is small but casts a broad shadow in the technology sphere.
Bloomington has been an active participant and leader in the government open source community. It is a significant user and producer of open source software, as well as an advocate for increasing the use of open source systems in government. Bloomington has also been an active in the Open311 community and has developed an open source Open311 toolkit in use by several cities. Bloomington is also the first city to have been selected to participate in Google’s Summer of Code program, securing 6 interns over the last 2 years for civic coding projects.
Major ongoing technology projects include the Open311 toolkit, adoption of Kuali TIME time & attendance software (in progress), and support for Bloomington’s downtown certified technology park downtown.
