City of the Year

City of Piqua (Ohio)

The City of Piqua (Ohio) is a community of just over 20,000 that has placed a premium on public engagement. Earlier this year, the City of Piqua received the Ohio City/County Management Association award for Citizen Participation through it's work with the CitizenNet Program. The flagship element of that program has been the Piqua Government Academy, which has had over 70 residents go through an experience rich program outlining city services.

I would describe the Piqua community as one where joyful friendliness abounds. Whether it is in sports, or the arts or education or business, friendships are abundant and all benefit from the caring of others.

The City of Piqua has placed a large emphasis on citizen engagement and employing technologies to connect with citizens. Our Public Works Department has deployed two smart phone applications. Fix 311 allows residents to report service needs, such as street light outage and pothole repairs in real time. Find a Park, helps visitors find city parks and the amenities provided at those facilities.

The City of Piqua was also the first city in the State of Ohio to adopt NextDoor, the social networking site for neighbors. The City of Piqua also uses the traditional social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and has a fully functional website.

Other independent organizations in the community are using technology to further their mission as well. The Piqua Area United Way, uses a new online volunteer management system to recruit, train and place volunteers in over a dozen human service agencies in the community. Mainstreet Piqua, Inc., the downtown development corporation, uses smart phone applications to help promote downtown businesses and provide information to tourists.

Most of the citizen engagement activities in the community of course happen face to face, the most well known being the Piqua Government Academy.

The Academy has had over 70 residents go through the program to get first hand experiences on how government works, from learning the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems of our utility systems or the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the financial management tracking system we use (Springbrook), participants see and understand how the city uses technology to help the city run more efficiently.

Just recently a visitor to Piqua commented on how freindly everyone was in Piqua. "Piqua Pride" are not just words to the citizens of Piqua; they do have Pride of thier community.

Piqua is a community comprised of people who care about each other and the city. we have excellent schools, very good city services and city employees. People in Piqua care about the community and work hard to make it a very good place to live and work. The community supports its schools and community projects like our high school stadium which was built with private funds and is one of the best in the entire state of Ohio.
