City of the Year

New York City

NYC's Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the first digital roadmap of any city in the nation in May 2011. Today NYC government reaches over 4 million a month through more than 200 social media channels (http://nyc.gov/socialmedia), dozens of mobile applications (http://nyc.gov/cityapps) and its website nyc.gov. NYC introduced real-time APIs for city data in the NYC OpenData platform and the 311 API. The City has also launched dozens of crowdsourcing initiatives, such as the interactive Bike Share map (http://nyc.gov/bikeshare). The City held its first hackathon this summer, as well as a social media summit for 200+ government employees. It also has one of the first emergency social media policies in the nation, first unveiled during Hurricane Irene. NYC live streams major announcements on a daily basis, and every week the Mayor responds to questions tagged with #askmike. These are just a few examples. See more at http://nyc.gov/digital
